Georgian Architecture
Georgian architecture spans the reign of George I (1715) to George IV (1830) in England and arrived in North America around the same time. Architects Inigo Jones, Christopher Wren and James Gibbs were fascinated with the beauty and symmetry of Renaissance architecture and created their own version which we now refer to as Georgian.
Georgian architecture is all about symmetry, balance and proportion. It has a very formal feel to it. A famous movie Georgian house is the house in Home Alone.
Features of a Georgian style house include:
A square or rectangular shaped building
Brick façade
Central front door with symmetrical windows on either side
Did I mention symmetry? Symmetrical doors, windows, columns, chimneys, etc.
Box like interior rooms
Usually 2.5 stories
Hip roof sometimes with dormers
Grand entrance often with pediments or transom window
Large, double hung sash windows with 12 over 12 panes of glass
Formal looking
